About "work" and q (charge)


"Work" is a concept of physics not Electronics. I often think of "work" and cannot get it. "Work" is a definition, and rather mathematical one. Everyone is taught as "Work is Force x distance." But what does  "Work = Force x distance" physically mean ?


Mathematically or more generally (math is a kind of generalization).

The general definition of work done by a force must take into account the fact that the force may vary in both magnitude and direction, and that the path followed may also change in direction. All these things can be taken into account by defining work as an integral.

The point is F (Force) is a vector, which is easy to understand (having magnitude and direction). But distance is not a vector quantity. So Wiki (recently, perhaps) uses 'displacement' (which is defined as a vector quantity) instead of 'distance'. 'Displacement' seems having magnitude (distance or length) and direction (from A to B).

The above Hyperphysics explanation is not enough in that

F with an arrow and s with an arrow are vectors. The dot product of these vectors F and s results in  F (no arrow) cosθ x ds (no arrow),  which is a scalar quantity. So work is a scalar quantity. Point is that s with an arrow is a vector quantity, which can be said a mathematical definition. Length and distance are scalar quantity. Even 'displacement' (almost equivalent to distance) looks like a scalar quantity but as mentioned above 'displacement'  is defined as a vector quantity.

Work and Voltage: Constant Electric Field

The case of a constant electric field, as between charged parallel plate conductors, is a good example of the relationship between work and voltage.
The electric field is by definition the force per unit charge, so that multiplying the field times the plate separation gives the work per unit charge, which is by definition the change in voltage.

The underline is made by sptt. By definition but we can say "a charge experience a force in the electric field (static)."

E = F/q or  qE = F.

We cannot see force but feel it or can see a movement of matter due to force. (q is too small to see, however).

As the unit of W (Work) is joule, which is Energy, which is Power (VI) x time (t). So

VIt (Energy)
--------------   = V ,  or  VIt (Energy)  =  qV
       q

V (Volt) is therefore Energy divided by Charge. What is it ?

or  VIt (Energy)  =  qV

Again what is it ?   Energy makes qV or  qV makes Energy ? (Energy is conserved.)
